FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Seniors’ Creativity Showcased at
Scotiabank Nuit Blanche Art Festival
Belmont House is the first seniors home to participate in Toronto’s Scotiabank Nuit Blanche contemporary art festival

Toronto, ON (Sept 15, 2014) - On Saturday, October 4th “This Light of Mine” art exhibit will showcase the creative capability and stories of seniors from Belmont House, as part of the Scotiabank Nuit Blanche all-night contemporary art festival.  The exhibit will be open all night from 7pm-7am at 401 Richmond Artist Centre (401 Richmond St. W, at Spadina), throughout the second floor’s west hallway.
During this past July and August, a group of 12-14 participating residents have been meeting weekly to brainstorm their creative submissions, each rooted in personal memory and storytelling. Project Curator Tara Dorey, aided by the Belmont House Recreation Staff team, encouraged the group of residents to showcase their various talents and explore creative ways to portray their rich life stories.
Tara Dorey, the Project Curator reflects: “Many residents told me ‘I don’t think anyone would be interested in what I have to say’. My favourite part of this process has been watching the seniors become confident that their stories and ways of telling them are worth sharing.”
The participating seniors and staff from Belmont House hope to play a leadership role by inspiring others to follow in their path in using creative projects like “This Light of Mine” to challenge the perception of aging.Under the guidance of Belmont House's unique Art Therapy program, many residents are able to express their creativity and talent.  Residents (most over the age of 85) continue to lead rich and fulfilling lives, and have so much to share. Participating in Toronto’s Scotiabank Nuit Blanche festival has allowed the group to show the value, talent, and ability of seniors on an international platform.

Belmont House is a charitable, non-profit, Christian home for seniors offering long term care and retirement living. For more than 150 years, we have provided quality care to our residents and assisted living for our tenants,  in a safe and stimulating home environment. Scotiabank Nuit Blanche is a 12-hour all-night public art festival with a mandate to make contemporary art accessible to large audiences, while inspiring dialogue and engaging the public to examine its significance and impact on public space. Nuit Blanche encourages celebration and community engagement. From sunset to sunrise city spaces and neighbourhoods are transformed into temporary exhibitions.
